Johnston's Motor Car - Dominic Behan

It was down by Egan's Corner, one morning I did stray,
I met a fellow rebel there and this to him did say,
"I've orders from the captain to assemble at Dunbar,
Oh, but how can we assemble without a motor car?"

"Oh, Barney dear, be of good cheer and I'll tell you what we'll do,
Sure, the Orangeman have all the cars and we have but a few,
We'll wire into Stonehole and before we'll walk that far
We'll give the boys a bloody good ride in Johnston's Motor Car.

When doctor Johnston got the word he soon pulled on his shoes,
Says he, "This case is urgent, the time must I lose",
He wore a fancy castor hat and up on his coat a star,
You could hear the ding going down Glenfin in Johnston's Motor Car.

Now but when he got to the railway bridge, he met the rebels there,
He knew the game was up with him, and at them he did stare,
Says he, "I've got a permit, for travelling near and far",
"We don't want your English permit, we want your motor car."

"Oh, what will all the Specials say when I have reached Drumboe,
For to see my car was captured, by the rebels at Dungloe?"
"Sure, we will give you a receipt for it, signed by Captain Barr,
And when Ireland gets her freedom, you'll get your motor car."

We sat the car in motion and we filled it to the brim,
With rifles, bayonets shining, sure old Johnston grim,
Barney hoisted the Sinn Féin flag and we shot off like a star,
And we gave three cheers for freedom and Johnston's Motor Car.

When the Specials heard this it filled their heats with scorn,
They swore they'd have reprisals before they would give o'er,
They searched the hills and the valleys and the woodlands near and far,
But the IRA were far away, in Johnston's Motor Car.
