[Verse]
Throughout this lovely land many stories has been told,
And songs about our martyrs of heroes brave and bold,
But there's none that's more greater than the ones held so high,
Who gave there lives for freedom and the cause for which they die.
[Chorus]
And Martin Doherty told me, many years gone by,
"I fought for Ireland's freedom and for this I'll die."
[Verse]
Born and raised in Finglas, with a family staunch and true,
In these young days he always dreamt of, in his heart he always knew,
For to fight for Ireland's freedom against the forces of the Crown,
So he joined the IRA, in dear old Dublin town.
[Chorus]
And Martin Doherty told me, many years gone by,
"I fought for Ireland's freedom and for this I'll die."
[Verse]
Many years he spent in prison, a place we all know well,
Those days he thought of freedom, while in a portly cell,
The years and months went by and his day of freedom came,
The struggle for his country was the path he chose again.
[Chorus]
And Martin Doherty told me, many years gone by,
"I fought for Ireland's freedom and for this I'll die."
[Verse]
On May the twenty first the year was '94
Outside the Widow Scallans, he was standing by the door,
When a group of cowardly gunmen, a bombing in the sight,
Was stopped by an IRA soldier, on that fatal night.
[Chorus]
And Martin Doherty told me, many years gone by,
"I fought for Ireland's freedom and for this I'll die."
[Verse]
So farewell to you Doco, farewell a soldier brave,
Your life so cruelly taken and many lives you saved,
You died on that evening so others they might see,
A land of peace and freedom and of liberty.
[Chorus]
And Martin Doherty told me, many years gone by,
"I fought for Ireland's freedom and for this I'll die."
[Chorus]
And Martin Doherty told me, many years gone by,
"I fought for Irelands freedom and for this I'll die."
Yes you fought for Ireland's freedom and for this you die.
