McCaughey And Grew - Spirit Of Freedom

Oh, gather round comrades, I have a sad tale to tell,
Of two brave volunteers and the night that they fell,
Two ordinary lads, they were honest and true,
Cherished memories we'll keep of McCaughey and Grew.

Young Martin McCaughey from County Tyrone,
Spent his short life at war and defending his home,
Thought wounded in battle, he returned to the fight,
And fought bravely till murdered on that dark winters night.

Dessie Grew was no stranger to hardship and fear,
He spent long years in jail for the cause he held dear,
Not for him is life pleasures of freedom and fun,
Dessie love for his people meant the war must be won.

In a dark lonely farmyard, the Brits lay in wait,
For the two volunteers to drive through the gate,
Then the still night erupted with a terrible sound,
And Martin and Dessie lay dead on the ground.

The Brits claimed a victory, "Two more Irishmen dead",
But our struggle is strengthened by the blood that they shed,
For eight hundred years we've been butchered and slew,
By the cowards who murdered McCaughey and Grew.

Keep their names in your heart, now this tale you've been told,
Of these two volunteers so brave and so bold,
Two ordinary lads, they were honest and true,
Cherished memories we have of McCaughey and Grew,
Cherished memories we have of McCaughey and Grew.
