McSheffrey And Deery - Spirit Of Freedom

I walked along this lonely graveyard, high upon the hill,
With memories of these gallant soldiers, dreams to fulfil,
CĂș Chulainn stands so brave and bold, defiantly over the plot,
The roll of honour, Derry Brigade, ones who bravely fought,
Side by side at the graves of two, their bodies at rest,
Eddie McSheffrey, Paddy Deery, soldiers laid to rest.

No more we'll see our volunteers, as they lie there in their graves
Are two of Derry's finest sons, their lives they proudly gave,
My thoughts go back to that day, in 1987,
And the RA were going to make a move, on the streets of Creggan,
The fatal blast was heard by all, the people gathered round,
Then "Oh my God!" someone cried, "Two young men are down!"

Now Eddie was a gallant soldier, fearless to the end,
He suffered hardship, tragedy, his right to defend,
To free his country from these chains, an end to British rule,
Eddie's part for the cause, he played it to the full,
In Abbey Park, two volunteers, a thorn in England's side,
Eddie badly wounded there, this comrade was to die.

The courage of the wee man there, no braver will you meet,
No Crumlin Road, no Castlereagh, could his spirit they defeat,
Paddy Deery's boyhood days, brought up in Derry town,
He knew harassment at first hand, by the forces of the Crown,
When just a lad of fifteen years, taking up the fight,
A rubber bullet from a gun, one eye he lost his sight.

Now to the ranks of the IRA, a soldier he became,
Six counties under British rule, he fought them to reclaim,
He left his native Derry town and headed on the run,
The Brits they used their dirty tricks, informers work was done,
Now thousands walked along the route, to salute these soldier brave,
To say, "Farewell" to these young men, carried to their graves.

The crowd harassed and baton charged, by the hated RUC,
In honour of these volunteers, they stood defiantly,
And the RA they played a last farewell, with a volley from their guns,
To honour two brave volunteers, Derry's finest songs,
Oh, Paddy and his comrade Eddie, they now lie side by side,
Their name will stay engraved in gold, for Ireland's cause they died.

Oh, Paddy and his comrade Eddie, they now lie side by side,
Their name will stay engraved in gold, for Ireland's cause they died
Their name will stay engraved in gold, for Ireland's cause they died,
Their name will stay engraved in gold, for Ireland's cause they died,
Their name will stay engraved in gold, for Ireland.
