Margaret Skinnider - The Irish Brigade

[Verse]
To do her bit for Ireland was Margaret Skinnider's dream,
When she heard her parents talking of that land beyond the sea,
She knew when she was old enough, her path it was quite clear,
She joined Cumann na mBan in Glasgow and became a volunteer.

To do her bit for Ireland she went to Glasgow town,
Where she joined the Woman's Rifle Club, set up by the crown,
But not to defend the Empire nor to shoot a Kaiser Bill,
But to learn to use a rifle and to use that rifle well.

[Chorus]
She was born just east of Glasgow in a place they call Coatbridge,
Where the Irish in their thousands came to work and live,
They came to feed their families and to mine the iron ore,
And rebel hearts beat stronger now, on Scotland's hostile shore.

[Verse]
To do her bit for Ireland, she fought at Easter week,
As a sniper on the college roof overlooking Stephen's Green,
She volunteered to lead a band to burn the Shelbourne down,
But 3 bullets struck young Margaret and sent her to the ground.

She had done her bit for Ireland and her not yet 25,
But God was good to Margaret and the young girl did survive,
And in Scotland and in Ireland wherever rebels live,
She recieved a hero's welcome, this lassie from Coatbridge.

[Chorus]
She was born just east of Glasgow in a place they call Coatbridge,
Where the Irish in their thousands came to work and live,
They came to feed their families and to mine the iron ore,
And rebel hearts beat stronger now, on Scotland's hostile shore.
Yes, rebel hearts beat stronger now, on Scotland's hostile shore.
