Seán South Of Garryowen - The Irish Brigade

[Intro]
Once more, throughout her hills and vales,
The voice of Ulster called,
And her echoing wail on the northern gale,
Resounds of Limerick's walls.

Oh, but not in vain!
Her cry of pain, though heard by one, alone,
Oh, for to her aid, with gun and blade,
Came Seán from Garryowen.

[Verse]
It was on a dreary New Year's Eve as the shades of night fell down,
When the lorry load of volunteers approached a border town,
There were men from Dublin and from Cork, Fermanagh and Tyrone, (You're on your own!)
But the leader was a Limerick man, Seán South from Garryowen.

And as they moved along the streets up to the barrack door,
They scorned the danger they might meet, the fate that lay in store,
They were fighting for old Ireland, to claim their very own,
And the foremost of that gallant band was South from Garryowen.

But the sergeant spoiled their daring plan, he spied them through the door,
Then sten guns and the rifles peal, a hail of death did pour,
Aye, and when that awful night was over, two men lay as cold as stone,
There was one from near the border and one from Garryowen.

[Bridge]
Those men now lie, by Pearse's side, who faced the dark alone,
For they did not fear the RUC or specials on patrol,
Oh, they chose to fight for a nations rights, one land to claim their own,
Young O'Hanlon from that border town, Sean South from Garryowen.

[Verse]
No more he will hear the seagull's cry, o'er the murmuring Shannon tide,
For he fell beneath a northern sky, brave O'Hanlon by his side,
He has gone to join that gallant band of Plunkett, Pearse and Tone, (Wolfe Tone!)
Another martyr for old Ireland Seán South from Garryowen.

It was on a dreary New Year's Eve as the shades of night fell down,
When the lorry load of volunteers approached a border town,
There were men from Dublin and from Cork, Fermanagh and Tyrone, (You're on your own!)
But the leader was a Limerick man, Seán South from Garryowen,
Yes, the leader was a Limerick man, Seán South from Garryowen.
